Building information modeling (BIM) will be a component of a new alliance that the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) and International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) recently formalized. Under their memorandum of understanding (MOU), the organizations intend to address various topics, such as using BIM as a facility-management tool. The overall goal of the two-year agreement is to promote facility management education, credentials, and research for sustainable laboratories and related high-technology facilities.

California’s Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has selected Autodesk Inc.’s AutoCAD Civil 3D for road and highway design projects across the state. A five-year contract between the two parties permits access to the company’s AutoCAD Civil 3D software, training, and services. Civil 3D is part of Autodesk’s portfolio of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Infrastructure solutions, which includes software for planning, designing, building, and managing infrastructure.

The Construction Industry Council (CIC) in the United Kingdom has established a Building Information Modelling (BIM) Forum to implement a strategy paper that the U.K.'s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills published June 22. Chaired by Rob Manning of AECOM , the group will work with other industry bodies to pursue a primary recommendation offered in the “Innovation and Growth Report on Low Carbon Construction.”
A subgroup of the BIM Forum also has been created to consider issues of liability in relation to BIM. This subgroup, headed by David King of HOK, has met twice. The first meeting of the BIM Forum is scheduled for July 7.
