NBS Survey Indicates that the Use of BIM in the United Kingdom Is Growing

The share of construction professionals using building information modeling (BIM) in the United Kingdom has more than doubled since 2010, according to the results of a survey that NBS (a trading name of RIBA Enterprises LTD) released earlier this month. About one-third (31 percent) of surveyed construction professionals in the U.K. are using BIM, up from approximately 13 percent in 2010. The company completed its latest National BIM Survey late last year and collected responses from about 1,000 construction professionals, representing a range of business sizes and disciplines from across the industry, including architecture, engineering, and surveying.

Building information modeling (BIM) expert Finith Jernigan had plenty to tell construction professionals attending a recent WPL Publishing webinar about the types of information that owners want and need. The webinar, “Data, Collaboration and the Cloud: Prepare for Design-Build Practices of Tomorrow,” took place Jan. 26 and focused on his recently released book, entitled Makers of the Environment: Building Resilience into Our World One Model at a Time. 

BIM Provision Included in Recently Introduced House Bill

Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) has introduced legislation that is designed in part to promote building information modeling (BIM) and integrated design processes.  His High-Performance Buildings bill (H.R. 3371) would require the U.S. General Accountability Office (GAO) to study and report on the use of integrated design processes and BIM for the design and construction of federal buildings.

Firm Plans Expansion of BIM Consulting Services

Gehry Technologies (GT) intends to expand its building information modeling (BIM) consulting services and continue development of its design and project management technology, drawing upon $10 million in Series B financing that the firm recently secured. This round of financing, led by Autodesk with participation from Dassault Systemes and private investors, brings total funding to $15 million.

Expect building information modeling (BIM) to proliferate in the coming year as more companies embrace the technology, according to the business and technology consulting firm Microdesk. Proliferation of BIM is one of the top five trends for 2012 that architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO) companies should prepare for now, according to the firm.  

First Wave of Construction Professionals Receive Accreditation Through BIM Education Program

Thirty-four people have earned what is believed to be first assessment-based credential to recognize construction professionals for their ability to use building information modeling technology. The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) offers the accreditation, called the Certificate of Management-Building Information Modeling (CM-BIM).

Autodesk Acquires Provider of CAD, CAM, Estimating Software

Autodesk Inc. has acquired Micro Application Packages Ltd. (MAP), a United Kingdom-based provider of CAD, CAM, and estimating software that supports fabrication and construction for the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) industry. The acquisition is expected to help Autodesk support the evolution to model-based design workflows among MEP contractors, engineers, designers, and fabricators who provide design, detailing, estimating, and manufacturing services for MEP systems.

NATSPEC Releases Building Information Modeling Guide

NATSPEC has released a building information modeling (BIM) guide that is intended to clarify what is meant when BIM is required on a project. “Too often a client has talked about wanting BIM on a project without clarifying their requirements in a consistent manner,” according to the non-profit organization. “The guide will reduce confusion and wasted effort. The guide can also be used as a planning tool by consultants to clarify the services they propose to provide when preparing bids for projects.”

For building information modeling (BIM) to reach its full potential around the world, governments will need to play a significant role in promoting the technology, according to WSP Group Plc. This conclusion is included in a new report that the global engineering design consultancy commissioned, entitled “10 Truths about BIM.”

Number of Projects Using 3D-BIM Expected to Increase Slowly

The number of projects using three-dimensional building information modeling (3D-BIM) will increase slowly, Design Master Software Inc. recently concluded after surveying engineers and designers in the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) industry about their use of the technology.
