Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) has introduced legislation that is designed in part to promote building information modeling (BIM) and integrated design processes. His High-Performance Buildings bill (H.R. 3371) would require the U.S. General Accountability Office (GAO) to study and report on the use of integrated design processes and BIM for the design and construction of federal buildings.

Gehry Technologies (GT) intends to expand its building information modeling (BIM) consulting services and continue development of its design and project management technology, drawing upon $10 million in Series B financing that the firm recently secured. This round of financing, led by Autodesk with participation from Dassault Systemes and private investors, brings total funding to $15 million.

Thirty-four people have earned what is believed to be first assessment-based credential to recognize construction professionals for their ability to use building information modeling technology. The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) offers the accreditation, called the Certificate of Management-Building Information Modeling (CM-BIM).

Autodesk Inc. has acquired Micro Application Packages Ltd. (MAP), a United Kingdom-based provider of CAD, CAM, and estimating software that supports fabrication and construction for the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) industry. The acquisition is expected to help Autodesk support the evolution to model-based design workflows among MEP contractors, engineers, designers, and fabricators who provide design, detailing, estimating, and manufacturing services for MEP systems.

NATSPEC has released a building information modeling (BIM) guide that is intended to clarify what is meant when BIM is required on a project. “Too often a client has talked about wanting BIM on a project without clarifying their requirements in a consistent manner,” according to the non-profit organization. “The guide will reduce confusion and wasted effort. The guide can also be used as a planning tool by consultants to clarify the services they propose to provide when preparing bids for projects.”
